Arrival Of King George & Queen Mary In India, 1911
There are 3 old 1911 photo postcards of King George V and Queen Mary’s tour to India. They arrived at Bombay, now Mumbai Harbour by the royal ship “HMS Medina” on Dec 2nd, 1911. Their schedule as would be expected was obviously hectic. Both King George and Queen Mary were to attend the Delhi Durbar held in their honor in Delhi on December 14. In these three photo postcards, their majesties are seen landing at Apollo Bunder.
They were ferried in a special boat from the Medina that was anchored in the port area. The arrival of King George & Queen Mary created a great interest in India. Because this would be the first time a British sovereign stepped foot on Indian soil. Another postcard shows them walking towards the amphitheater built especially for this occasion. Here they would be felicitated by high officials and the elite of Bombay citizens. Click on the photo for better view.
Did you know- after the countless stopovers across the country their last stop would be in Calcutta. From where they would proceed to Bombay by a royal train to still more days of hectic schedule before leaving on the Medina.
