This book is about the Nizam of Hyderabad, at the time the richest man in the world. It is more than a portrait of an individual. The reserved and slightly eccentric prince through whom the Indian Government ruled Hyderabad. He was the seventh in a line that descended from Aurangzeb’s Viceroy in the Deccan. The book begins with an outline of the dynasty’s history. The Nizams of Hyderabad were always loyal allies of the British. Karaka’s account of the ending of this relationship, when the British left and the Indian Army marched into Hyderabad. The book further reports on the Nizam’s paperweights made of a single diamond, tin trunks full of unaccounted emeralds, and so on. Click image to enlarge.
