Vintage Photo Charing Cross Ooty 1930
Vintage Photo Charing Cross Ooty 1930. This is a vintage photo of Ooty’s Charing Cross of 1930. Charing Cross or Charring Cross I don’t know which one is correct, but both seem to be commonly in use. Shown in the photo at the center of the road junction in a triangular plot is the famous Adam’s Fountain.
Adam’s Fountain was built in honor of a Governor of Ooty who was very popular during his tenure. The Fountain was initially built in front of the District Collector’s office in 1886. Because of water supply problems there, it was relocated to its present site at Charing Cross.
Today Charing Cross is a slightly chaotic junction a hash of unorganized traffic, buildings, and shops. Nonetheless, it still has traces of its old-world British charm just like other places in Ooty. What you are viewing in this photo is a Charing Cross in its pristine form.
Charing Cross is very close to the Botanical Gardens of Ooty. Read about Loved monument in Ooty faces crisis. Read my post- Antique Photo Ooty Town & Lake 1890., and Antique Photo Ooty Nilgiris Or Blue Mountains (#1).
