View Of 19th Century Poona Near Bombay, 1875 Print

An 1875 print with a view of 19th-century Poona near Bombay (now Mumbai). This page is from, The Illustrated London News, of Nov 13, 1875. Since it lies on the Deccan Plateau, Poona (Pune) is fittingly called the “Queen of the Deccan”. Also because of the verdant landscape and salubrious weather.

It is around 150 km from Mumbai. Poona has a rich and diverse history. However, control shifted between the Marathas, the Adil Shahi dynasty, and the Mughals. Indelibly imprinted on our minds is undoubtedly, Shivaji, the great Maratha Warrior. The city remained under Shivaji’s control for a major part of his life.
