Royal Visit To British Era Bombay – Old Print 1883

An old 1883 print of the duke and duchess visit to British-era Bombay, now Mumbai.  This page is from the London based The Graphic of Dec 22, 1883. It measures 16 x 11 inches. And in honor of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught’s visit, a fair was held at the Esplanade, Bombay.

The Duke was Prince Arthur the third son of Queen Victoria and her favorite. He had married the great-niece of Wilhelm I,(Emperor of Germany) Princess Louise of Prussia. Since he was a Royal family member, held many posts. One is most notable as the Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916.

He was also an army officer and rose from the ranks to serve one of several posts as the Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay army from 1886 to 1890. He was a General while visiting Mumbai in 1883. Read more about Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

Did you know- Connaught Place in New Delhi is named after Prince Arthur’s visit to India as the Duke of Connaught.
