Port Trust Offices British Era Bombay, 1905 Postcard

A 1905 Port Trust Office in British Era Bombay (Mumbai). It is an important organization that was formed by the British in 1873. Patterned on the Mersey Board in England controlling all harbour activities. Extensive land reclamation and the formation of docks came under the Port Trust’s ambit. A Britisher John  Fleming was prominent in the forming of the Bombay Port Trust.

And was instrumental in the land reclamation projects in the 1860s. Half of India’s exports pass through the Bombay port, making it undeniably the busiest in India. There was an active railway station known as Ballard Pier mole station. Although not visible in this postcard the mole station was located just a little further down the building. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- Mumbai’s expanding growth and population pressure constrained the growth of the port by the 1970s. This led to the establishment of the Nhava Sheva port across Mumbai Harbour in Navi Mumbai on the mainland. Nhava Sheva began operations in 1989, and most container traffic now flows through Nhava Sheva.
