Parliament House New Delhi, 1930 Postcard

Parliament House New Delhi, 1930 Postcard

This is an old 1930s photo postcard of the Parliament House or the Legislative Assembly then of New Delhi. Although King George V announced in the 1911 Delhi Durbar that the capital of India would be shifted from Calcutta (Kolkata) to Delhi. But it was only by 1929 the Parliament Building, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and other important buildings opened.

After the King’s announcement, they entrusted two British architects Edwin Lutyens and Henry Baker with the planning and design of New Delhi. One of the buildings was this Legislative Council or the Parliament House. Edwin Lutyens and Henry Baker had also designed the magnificent Viceroy’s House or the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

See my post- Rashtrapati Bhavan & Parliament New Delhi – Old Photo 1933. Lutyens and Baker received a knighthood in 1918 and 1926, respectively. Read more about Sir Edwin Lutyens, Herbert Baker & Imperial New Delhi

Did you know- that Lutyen’s also designed furniture.
