Painting of Fort St George Colonial Madras By British Soldier, 1851
A well-preserved 1851 watercolor painting of Fort St George by a British soldier in colonial Madras. The Painting is unsigned, it has a handwritten note at the back “Fort. Madras from under the saluting battery, 30th March 1851.” This is a beautiful watercolour painting with fairly good detail of what the fort looked like in the mid-19th century.
A British soldier probably painted it from the beachside. The painting shows the sea almost touching the Fort St George’s walls, although the waters receded over time leaving a huge beach. Today the sandy beach is better known as Marina Beach. The “Saluting battery” may refer to where the 21-gun salute was fired inside the fort.
