Walter Gandy the author gives a good insight into the history of ornamental glass and its making. There are references to Egyptian and Phoenician glass, Hebrew, Persian and Greek glass. Roman glass, early Christian, Byzantine, and Saracen glass. Glass in medieval Italy, glass in Germany, France, and Great Britain. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, every church had its hourglass or sandglass placed on the pulpit to warn the preacher of the passing of time.

Glassmaking is believed to have originated in Egypt around 3500 years ago. They had the best knowledge in glassmaking some glass objects are in existence since 2000 BC.  The glass was moulded type but glass blowing was first discovered by Syrians in the 1st century BC. The use of glass in India is a bit sketchy. In India, some archaeologically excavated sites have thrown open glass objects in different colours discovered. Also found were Many tiles and glass shards. Click on the photo for better view.
