Madras High Court – Old Postcard 1900

This is an old 1900 postcard of the Madras High Court. The Madras High Court (now Chennai) is an imposing Indo-Saracenic style building with a number of domes on the roof.  The central dome is the biggest out of them all. A glass-framed circular box with a light-beaming unit was installed on top of this central dome.

Which acted as a lighthouse from 1894 to 1977. During the bombardment of Chennai by the German cruiser SMS Emden, on the night of 22 September 1914, a shell struck and damaged a portion of the compound wall of this High Court. A plaque reminding the exact spot of the damage is displayed on the High Court premises.
