Dhondy Road In Cantonment Deolali, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 postcard of Dhondy Road in the cantonment of Deolali (Devlali). Deolali was established as a British army cantonment in 1861. It catered as a transit camp and training center for British-era soldiers. It was also the Garrison area of the British, which was active in WWII. The newly arrived European soldiers were sent to Deolali for acclimatization and training.
They were put to rigorous training in drills, route marches, trekking, and so on. Later deputed to various military camps and garrisons throughout India. Devlali town is on the Deccan Plateau, it was perfect for soldiers arriving from England to softly acclimatize to the harsh Indian weather. Vaguely noticeable are some European soldiers armed with guns standing outside their Garrison office shown with the locals.
