Dhondy Road Deolali – Old Postcard 1900
This is another interesting old 1900 postcard of Deolali, now Devlali. Deolali was established as a British army cantonment in 1861. It catered as a transit camp and training center for British-era soldiers.
It was also the Garrison area of the British, which was active in WWII. They sent the newly arrived soldiers to Deolali for training purposes and acclimatization. And put them to rigorous drills, route marches, trekking, jungle training, and so on.
Then sent to various military camps and garrisons in India. Devlali town is on the Deccan Plateau, it was ideal for soldiers coming from England to acclimatize to the harsh Indian weather conditions through Devlali.
Notice in this 1900 vintage postcard of Dhondy Road at Deolali British soldiers armed with guns outside their Garrison office shown with the locals.
Did you know- Devlali is popular as a hill station and health resort, it is also a Hindu pilgrimage center.
