British Post Officer In Madras Presidency’s Calicut, 1900 Glass Slide Photo

calicut

A 1900 glass slide photo of a British post officer in Madras Presidency’s Calicut (Kozhikode). The Post Officer (now known as Postmaster) is seen with his attendants and horse cart (jutka), perhaps at the post office compound. Calicut was then part of the Malabar Province, which was under the Madras Presidency. Hence, it was not surprising that there were many British interests in the region.

Many spice, coconut, and coffee estates were spread out in Wayanad and the nearby areas. Most were owned by British planters and estate owners. Calicut was the first city in India where Europeans first arrived by the maritime route. The Portuguese, Vasco Da Gama, landed in the city in 1498 in search of pepper the black gold. Calicut is probably the lushest amongst the other Kerala cities like Cochin, and Trivandrum. Likewise, it is also blessed with backwaters, lakes, and mountains.

Did you know – that when the Portuguese landed in Calicut, at the time Babar was the Mughal Emperor at Delhi.
