British Army Life In India - 3 Photos 1900

Three old photos from 1900 that give a glimpse of British army life in India. Adorned with sun helmets, British army men with their horses probably preparing for a long ride. In the background tents are visible, an indispensable part of rugged army life even today.

The tents are a basic necessity for troops accommodation in times of peace and war that was easy to carry around. The second photo shows a lone officer astride a horse and his Indian attender fussing over it. As the growth of the East India Company increased it gained a political foothold in India. This necessitated the creation of a permanent army to protect their ever-growing economic interests. It is from here that the British Indian army’s creation first took place. Click on the photo for better view.
