A Crowd Of Britishers In Colonial India, Photo 1880
This old 1880 photo shares a rare glimpse of British life in colonial India. A mixed crowd of Britishers and Indians apparently watching a game intensely in colonial India. Some sort of field sport is taking place that is not visible. Not entirely sure what exactly is the event but what is interesting is the crowd that is looking on from the sidelines.
Evidently, a sizable number in the crowd are fashionably dressed British ladies with their equally stylish hats. Also looking on are British children and native Indians in the left corner. At the back are a number of utility tents that seems to be everpresent with the British. This truly gives a rare glimpse of life in colonial India in the 19th century. Did you know- in 1872, in North West Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), there were around 5,000 British women. By 1901 the number went up to 42,000.
