Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Bombay, Rare 1905 Advertisement

A rare 1905 advertisement of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai). One of the earliest of Taj’s advertising with an interesting line “European Management. European Staff”. This was not uncommon at the time, hotels in Bombay usually preferred European management. The Taj probably may have been leased out to European management during the early years.

Rao Saheb Vaidya and D N Mirza originally designed the hotel, the foundation was laid in 1898. The Taj Palace Hotel opened its doors on, December 16, 1903, with 17 guests. It faces the Gateway of India, whose foundation stone was laid in 1911. The Taj acquired the next-door Greens Hotel, which was demolished and in its place the ‘Taj Tower’ came up in 1973. Today the Taj Mahal Hotel is an iconic landmark.
