Khadakwasla Dam Pune, Old Postcard 1905

This is a vintage photo postcard of the Khadakwasla Dam dating to 1905. Shown is one of the earliest photos of the Khadakwasla Dam under the British India era. Built by the British on the Mutha River, it is a moderate-sized dam. And is one of the primary sources of drinking water to Poona or Pune. The upstream Panshet Dam collapsed in 1961, the deluge of water flowed into the Khadakwasla Dam reservoir.

Being smaller, it could not withstand the overflow creating a serious breach, flooding ensued that had almost devastated Pune city. The Khadakwasla Dam was built by the British in the 1870s to alleviate the severe drought felt in the region of east Poona in the 19th century. Read more- Khadakwasla Dam. One side of the lake is the NDA or the National Defence Academy. A premier joint armed services institution to train cadets for the Army, Navy, and the Airforce. The National Defence Academy was commissioned in 1955.

Did you know- the dam is 20 km away from Pune and supplies drinking water and for irrigation purposes to the city.
