The Jama Masjid In The Outskirts Of Delhi,1800s Print1

This is an early 1800s hand-colored Print of the Jama Masjid (mosque) on the outskirts of Delhi. Groups of people, an elephant a horse are visible in this beautiful hand-drawn engraving. The Jama Masjid with its minarets is visible on the right. The bottom image shows a sketch of probably a small mausoleum with other graves, not sure what it is about.

The Jama Masjid mosque was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1656 and is located in old Delhi. Shah Jahan had also built the Jama Masjid in Agra in 1648, in honor of his favorite daughter, Jahan Ara Begum. To complete it, it took six years and 5000 men.

The mosque was built with red sandstone, once completed around 10,000 people could be accommodated. Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire for two centuries (16th and 17th) later the capital was shifted to Delhi. It is well known that the famous Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in 1648.  The print measures 9½ x 8¾ inch. Click on the image to enlarge the view.
