Temple Of Maha Deo In Tardeo, Bombay, 1812 Print

This is an 1812 print of the Temple of Maha Deo in Tardeo Bombay (Mumbai). The temple is now known as Bhavani Shankar Temple and is located at Tardeo in Bombay. The temple was once the family shrine of one of the richest businessmen of Bombay, Jagannath Shankarsheth. It stands out from the rest of the temples for its Deccan Maratha architectural style.
Since it was not on the city’s heritage list, the shrine, was almost bulldozed by the civic authorities. The timely intervention of D Sadashiv Gorakhshikar (Ex-Director of the Prince of Wales Museum) saved it from certain demolition. Thanks to Maria Graham, who sketched this temple vividly during the early 19th century. Ms Graham was among the few Britishers who were accomplished illustrators during the British India era. The print was published on July 1, 1812, by A. Constable & Co. Edinburgh. Click the image to enlarge.
