Temple Arts of Kerala is an interesting book evidently on temple arts of Kerala. This book treats the subjects of painting, sculpture, architecture, and related arts. With special emphasis on carving and structural style in wood. Remarkably, many of the monuments have not been previously published.
The art mentioned here is mainly Hindu, although some investigation is made into Jain and Buddhism. This book was a part of an ongoing research of wooden temple design throughout South Asia. It is a contribution to the knowledge of Kerala with its hidden riches of South Indian tradition.
Author Ronald M. Bernier was a specialist in the art and architecture of South Asia. He was a professor of art history at the University of Colorado, USA. He spent part of 1976 and the whole of 1979 in India where he photographed temples in every district in Kerala. He died in 2012 at the age of 69, as a result of complications arising from multiple sclerosis.
