New Site of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament & Secretariat Building In Delhi – 2 Prints 1914

Site of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament & Secretariat Delhi -2 Prints1

Two old prints from British-era newspapers show the new proposed site of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and the Secretariat Building in Delhi. At the Delhi Durbar of 1911, King George V announced, Delhi, as the new capital of India. The King laid the foundation stone before he departed from Delhi. The work began in 1912-13, with Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker being the chief architects for the new capital.

The first print shows the Raisina Mound (now known as Raisina Hill), where the three seats of power the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and Secretariat Buildings would stand. The Viceroy’s House (Rashtrapati Bhavan), was built on cream and red sandstones. The second print shows the construction of the Secretariat Building’s north and south blocks.

A light railway was utilized to carry away the debris. Two British architects, Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, were appointed as the chief architects. Both Lutyens and Baker were engaged in the planning and executing of the new capital. The Parliament Building in particular was inaugurated in 1927. The new capital of India was inaugurated in 1931. This page is from the “The Illustrated London News” of Jan 3, 1914.

Did you know – that the new Parliament House, known as Sansad Bhavan was inaugurated in September 2023.
