Russel Market In Cantonment British Era Bangalore, 1930 Photo

A 1930 photo of Russel Market in the cantonment area of British Era Bangalore (Bengaluru). T B Russel, the president of the Municipal Commission of the British era Bangalore harboured a plan to build a market. This was to cater to the ever-increasing needs of the civil and military population of the city.

A proposal to acquire land from the army to build a covered market in cantonment area was mooted in 1915.  The sole purpose was to sell vegetables, meat, fish, grocery, etc. After frequent delays, Hajee Sir Ismail Sait opened the market in 1927. It was named Russell Market after by-now retired T B Russell, the mastermind behind its creation. However, it is still called Market colloquially to this day. Click on the image for better view.
