Madras Central Railway Station, 1940 Advertisement
This is from the Walkabout magazine of Aug 1st, 1940. Walkabout was an illustrated magazine of travel and general topics, first published in 1934 and the last in 1974. The Madras Central Railway Station is located in the center of the city.
And is an iconic landmark of Madras, or Chennai, and also the whole of India. George Hardinge designed the Station, and it opened in 1873 with four platforms. The two-storied building is an imposing Indo-Saracenic style complete with a clock-tower. Today it has an astonishing seventeen platforms.
The building is well preserved although it is heavily crowded and hectic now. Notice the Electric Tram on the extreme right once a popular city transport but sadly closed down. Also, notice the sparse traffic on the road of Chennai compared to today’s haphazard traffic.
