M. Suriyamoorthy charcoal drawing on paper, it is signed and dated 2/11/64 (#3). An untitled semi-abstract charcoal drawing depicting a nude female subject, the poster measures 76 x 50 cm. M. Suriyamoorthy was a prolific and distinguished artist. He was known to create his own pigments from natural resources ranging from medicinal plants, seashells, tree gums, old siddha medicines, etc.
He was born in 1944 in southern India and died at the age of 68 in 2012. An important artist of the Madras Group who blended modernism by combining Indian traditions with modernistic techniques. His art leanings were towards regional and folk imagery. Suriyamoorthy’s artworks are strikingly eye-catching, with women-centric subjects generally.
With a distinct style of his own and uniquely avoided following any old masters or art movements. He had won over 47 prestigious awards for his artworks, many of which were exhibited internationally.
