M. Suriyamoorthy charcoal art on paper, it is signed and dated 2.11.64. This is an untitled semi-abstract charcoal drawing measuring 76 x 50 cm. M. Suriyamoorthy was a prolific and distinguished artist. He was known to create his own pigments from natural resources ranging from medicinal plants, seashells, tree gums, old siddha medicines, etc.
He was born in 1944 in southern India and died in 2012 at the age of 68. An important artist of the Madras Group who blended modernism by combining Indian traditions with modernistic techniques. His art leaned towards regional and folk imagery. Suriyamoorthy’s artworks are strikingly eye-catching, with generally women-centric subjects.
With a distinct style of his own and uniquely avoided following any old masters or art movements. He had won over 47 prestigious awards for his artworks, many of which were exhibited internationally.
