Looking North Towards Beautiful Marina & Senate House Madras, 1894 Photo

An 1894 photo that shows looking north towards the beautiful Marina and Senate House in Madras (Chennai). The spectacular 19th century view shows the Madras Senate House on the left, the Marina Promenade, and the beach is on the right. Faintly visible in the distance are the white Marine Villa and Fort St George. The mouth of the Cooum River is also faintly noticeable on the right just before Fort St George.

Slightly towards the north of Fort St George is the Madras Harbour. The Chepauk Palace is behind the Marine Villa with its vast semi-forested estate (at that time). The broad paved road leads from Adyar and San Thome crossing the river via the Napier Bridge leading to the Fort, harbour and high court and beyond. The Madras University Senate House, as it was called, was designed by Robert Chisholm, in the Indo-Saracenic style. The Marina Promenade and beach stretches 13 km. It links Fort St George in the north and San Thome in the south. This charming promenade was built on the orders of Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff in 1886.

Did you know – going to the top of the Madras Lighthouse that is close by, one can get a stunning view of the Marina beach.
