Kerala Backwaters & Village, Old Photo 1945

There are three old 1945 photos illustrating Kerala’s backwater and village. Backwaters also show the country and cargo boats. The photo with large cargo boats is possibly from the Mattancherry area of Cochin (now Kochi). The other two scenes are likely from the Ernakulam area (mainland Kochi) or the Mattancherry area itself.

The landscape has mostly changed, now the backwaters exist but the cargo boats are not seen much. But in place are the tourist houseboats that were somewhat copies of the Kettuvalloms or cargo boats. And are a major tourist draw in Kerala today. This images of the Kerala Backwaters & Village are not the same as shown in these old photos of 1945. Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- coir was and still is Kerala’s principal product because of an abundance of coconuts.
