This is a vintage 1900 map of Lucknow showing The Residency at the time of the Indian Revolt of 1857. After the great incident of the 1857 Indian Revolt; brought to an end the rule of the East India Company and placed India under the direct rule of the British Crown. The revolt began on 15 May 1857 and quickly spread to Delhi, where Bahadur Shah II, the last of the Moghul Emperor was reinstated on his throne.

The revolt began in Meerut by Indian troops in the service of the East India Company. It quickly spread to Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow. Often called the First War of Independence in India. Here it shows the map of Lucknow with the Residency surrounded by the British Garrison. The Residency took the brunt of the sepoy attack for around 8 months. Click on the photo for better view.
