Inauguration of Parliament House In New Delhi, 1927 Photo

A 1927 news photo of the inauguration of the Parliament House in New Delhi. A turnout of British Indian troops in front of the parliament house on inauguration day is seen. During the Delhi Durbar of 1911, King George V announced the shifting of the capital from Calcutta to New Delhi. Two British architects, Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker, were entrusted with developing the new capital. Lutyens had designed the Parliament building.

It took around six years to complete the rotund building, it was then known as The Imperial Legislative Council. There were three chambers consisting of the Council of State (later Rajya Sabha), the Legislative Assembly (Lok Sabha), and Chamber of Princes (library). Although the building was inaugurated in 1927, however, the new capital of New Delhi, was effectively inaugurated in 1931. This is now the old parliament house and is officially known as the Samvidhan Sadan. It has been converted into museum of democracy.
