Bombay’s Hotel Greens Where The Taj Tower Hotel Now Stands, 1902 Photo
A great 1902 photo of the Hotel Greens where the Taj Mahal’s Tower Hotel now stands in Bombay (Mumbai). The “L” shaped building is the Hotel Greens, it also shows a trussed shed on the Apollo Bunder. The hotel was at that time European managed and was immensely popular with the European crowd in the city. Probably a glimpse of the famous Taj Mahal Hotel under construction can be seen on the extreme left.
The Taj Hotel group had acquired the Hotel Greens in the 1970s. It was demolished and in its place a 24-storied high rise luxury annex the Taj Tower was constructed. It faces the Apollo Bunder that was once a landing jetty for passengers arriving by steamer. The iconic Gateway of India was built on the Apollo Bunder in 1924, it commommerated King George V and Queen Mary’s visit to the city in 1911.

Did you know – the Taj was not the first to get five-star status, that honour went to Juhu’s Sun N Sand Hotel in 1962. The Taj didn’t have a swimming pool then and hence could not qualify.
