Horse Drawn Tram & Advertising In Bombay Street, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 advertising postcard with a view of horse-drawn tram in a crowded street in Bombay. The displayed advertisement is that of A. Bertelli, an Italian perfume company. A. Bertelli was established in Milan, Italy, in 1888, and it produced pharmaceutical products. Later expanding into perfumes, the company was in the ever-growing activity in the production of medicinal specialties and perfumery.
Venus perfume seen in the advertisement was one of their early creations. Nonetheless, A. Bertelli was sold off in 1960. The view of the Bombay (Mumbai) Street is probably Bhendi Bazaar, a busy commercial street. It is still called by the same name and is a major commercial hub even today. Bombay was introduced with horse-drawn tramway in 1874. Later switching to electric trams in 1907, however, because of congestion and financial mismanagement, the popular tramway closed down forever in 1964.
Did you know – advertising postcards were very popular and effective before the advent of the fast growing electronic media.
