Glimpse Of Domestic Life During British Era India, 1885 Photo

Domestic Life During British India Era, 1890 Photo

A rare glimpse of domestic life during the British era in India is shown in this 1888 photo. A European officer gets a haircut from a turbaned Indian barber during the colonial era. At his side is his faithful pet dog generally keeping an eye on things. The barber’s trade in India is very old. Tradionarily barbers belong to a hereditary caste or clan.

Britishers may never had it so good while posted in India during the colonial era. An array of servants, a bungalow, horse cart for conveyance, and so on. The photo gives a rare glimpse of domestic life during the British era in India. The presence of Britishers in India was minuscule in comparison to the vast population of native Indians.

Indians were a majority in the military, civil services, and medical field. Although the critical and top-ranking posts were always reserved for the European. The cities of Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras were the main centers of British concentration of their personnel. The Britisher had it good in India, with a lifestyle, that was unthinkable back home in England. And to add to it his takeback after retirement was a small fortune.
