Exhibition In Progress At Azad Maidan Bombay, 1932 Photo

A 1932 photo of an exhibition at Azad Maidan in Bombay (Mumbai). A huge crowd seems to have turned out for the huge exhibition that had temporary stalls. The Bombay Gymkhana Club with its slanting roof is faintly visible at the far end on the right side corner of the ground.

Bombay’s Esplanade was once composed of massive open space. That later fragmented into the Oval Maidan, Azad Maidan, Cooperage, and Cross Maidan. In the time of the British era exhibitions were regular occurrences on the Maidans. Although images of these fairs are not common to find. To see an older exhibition on this same ground go to Royal Visit To British Era Bombay – Old Print 1883. The British held exhibitions and fairs to showcase new products and it was also an entertainment center for people going through daily grind.
