Esplanade Road British Era Madras – 2 Postcards 1945
Two old postcards of the Esplanade Road during British Era Madras (Chennai), dating to the 1910s and 1945. With two beautiful views of the Esplanade Road (NSC Bose Road). The road lined the northern periphery of a once vast expanse of land called the Esplanade. Located between today’s Parry’s Corner and Fort St George. The land was later to be occupied by the Madras High Court building in 1892.
The 1950 postcard shows a US flag fluttering from the US consulate building. The Anderson Church spire can be seen a few distances away. The Madras High Court with its domed towers is visible on the left side. A solitary Madras Electric Tram is running in the middle of the road seemingly on its way to its next destination.
Unlike today, the Esplanade Road looked beautiful with its sparse traffic at that time. The second postcard from 1910 shows the Madras High Court on the right side (viewed from the opposite end). The road looked barer with virtually no automobiles visible. Here also a lone electric tram can be spotted trundling on its iron-tracked pathway. Click on the photo for better view.
Did you know- the Esplanade Road which is just outside Fort St George is one of the earliest roads built by the British.
