Elephant Battles A Lion British India, 1837 Watercolour Painting

An 1837 British India-era beautiful watercolour painting of an elephant battling a lion. This is a 10 x 8 inch watercolour painting, it depicts an Elephant Battling a lion in British India. A lion appears to pounce on a European hunter, and the elephant and its mahout come to his timely rescue. On the reverse side is another watercolour of a pensive European Lady.

Although unsigned and untitled both the artworks are believed to have been done by the talented Major A.C. Hutchinson. Not much is known of Hutchinson except that he was with the Bengal Artillery which was under East India Company at the time. Painting in the 19th century was not widespread amongst Indians except for some like the great Raja Ravi Varma. An exceptionally gifted painter from Travancore, his paintings created a sort of mass hysteria because of the lifelike images he created. Click on the image to enlarge.
