Bombay Coast Showing The Taj Mahal Hotel – 4 Postcards 1906
Four old photo postcards (1905 to 1910) of the Bombay (Mumbai) coast showing the Taj Mahal Hotel. Jamsethji Tata’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel opened in 1903. However, the Gateway of India did not come up until 1924 on the Bombay coastline. The Gateways work began in 1911 and was completed in 1924.
Other landmarks that are faintly visible are the Royal Bombay Yacht Club with its annexe on the adjacent side. The outlines of the Rajabai Clock Tower, Bombay High Court, and Secretariat are recognizable in the far distance. The once European-owned Greens Hotel is visible on the immediate right of the Taj. The residential Art Deco Apartments are on the left where the rich Parsis lived.
It must be remembered that the Portuguese were in control of Bombay for 127 years. It remained stagnant under their reign and many years later, in 1661, it was handed over to King Charles II of England. As part of the dowry which he received on his marriage to Catherine of Braganza, who was the King of Portugal’s sister. Click on the photo for better view.
Did you know – the Greens Hotel was acquired and demolished in 1973 to make way for the Taj Tower.
