The Army & Navy Co-operative Society was first formed in England in 1871. It grew in popularity they branched out in many cities in England. Later to the British Empire first in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1891, opening their Calcutta (Kolkata) branch in 1901. It became very popular with the homesick British military and civil personnel longing for something from their homeland.

The building was designed by the popular architect F W Stevens, a familiar name in Mumbai. His designs included the iconic Victoria Terminus (VT), now the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Municipal Corporation Building, Royal Alfred Sailor’s Home, etc. Today this charming Victorian structure houses many of the Tata Group companies, the Tatas had bought the building in 1950.
